HIQA launches report on the findings of a readiness assessment of health data holders in Ireland
HIQA is today launching a report on the findings of a readiness assessment of health data holders in Ireland in relation to health data access body services.
This report was conducted as part of the ‘HealthData@IE project’ to identify key steps needed to prepare for the full implementation of the EHDS Regulation. By 2029 Ireland will need to establish a Health Data Access Body (HDAB) and relevant health data holders will be required to make their data available for secondary purposes. Findings of the readiness assessment include the need for effective infrastructure, governance structures and data sharing practices, as well as detailed rules and specifications for health data holders to prepare for the operationalisation and establishment of a HDAB service.
HIQA has developed a number of resources to help organisations prepare for implementing the EHDS Regulation. These include:
- Guidance for data holders (2025), which outlines what the EHDS Regulation means for health data holders in relation to secondary use of health data and assist them in preparations to ensure compliance.
- Training and Education Resource Portfolio that signposts and highlights tools and materials in relation to the EHDS and the secondary use of health data and relevant for any person interested in learning more about these topics,
- HealthData@IE webpages that provide a range of practical resources to improve understanding of the EHDS Regulation and steps to help you prepare for implementation.
Further guidance and materials will be added to our webpages as they become available and details shared on our social media. Read our full press release here and see the readiness assessment report at www.hiqa.ie.
