HIQA commences work on new National Health Dataset Catalogue for Ireland
Dear colleagues
Today HIQA has launched a report outlining the Requirements and Specifications of a new National Health Dataset Catalogue for Ireland. This will support the work of the ‘HealthData@IE’ project, led by the Department of Health (DoH) in collaboration with HIQA, the Health Research Board (HRB), key stakeholders within the Health Service Executive (HSE), and across the wider health system.
This new catalogue will build on existing work, including HIQA’s existing catalogue of national health and social care data collections, which is in place for over a decade.
Once developed, the National Catalogue will support the discoverability and responsible use of health datasets at both national and European level. This month (May 2026) the National Catalogue will be tested with Irish health data holders, and once finalised will be rolled out to a wider group of Irish health data holders later in 2026.

HIQA has also developed additional resources to help organisations prepare for implementing the EHDS Regulation, which are available on the HealthData@IE webpages. These include:
- Readiness assessment of health data holders in Ireland
- Guidance for data holders (2025), which outlines what the EHDS Regulation means for health data holders in relation to secondary use of health data and assist them in preparations to ensure compliance.
- Training and Education Resource Portfolio that signposts and highlights tools and materials in relation to the EHDS and the secondary use of health data
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Kind regards
Barbara
