Presidential Address

My first task as President must be to sincerely thank Suzanne Dennan, our retiring President and the IIRRT Council. The hard work and commitment they showed over the last two years has been tremendous. They have worked tirelessly to promote the integrity and professionalism of radiographers and radiation therapists both nationally and internationally. I am delighted and honoured to become President of such a strong professional body and look forward to collaborating with the Council over my term. I would also like to welcome our newest council members: Margaret Mulligan and Liam Downey. The Council is not the only voluntary group working on behalf of the Institute, it also has many subcommittees and working groups and I would like to acknowledge and thank these groups for their diligent work and dedication over the last number of years.

Since the establishment of the IIRRT in 1996, the Institute has aimed to promote and develop our professions, safeguard our professional interests and to represent our members’ views. During my presidency I hope to deliver on these goals.  As a radiation therapist I have worked for many years in the IIRRT promoting my profession, I am now looking forward to doing this on behalf of both professions and the organisation as a whole.

As we move into a new decade, the Institute has many challenges ahead, not least the establishment of the Health and Social Care Professionals Council Radiographers Board and statutory registration; the local and practical implementation of the nurse prescriber scheme and the reconfiguration of the Radiation Oncology services in line with the National Programme for Radiation Oncology. I hope that I will be able to rise to these challenges and effectively lead the Institute forward during my term.

I would like to take with opportunity to encourage you, the members, to become more actively involved in your professional body, through voicing your opinions and ideas and  by giving us feedback on the work we are doing and on the work you would like to see us do on your behalf. This Institute was formed to serve the interests of radiographers and radiation therapists and with your support and direction, we hope to achieve this. The Institute can be contacted via e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , our postal address: 28 Millbrook Court, Kilmainham, Dublin 8, our phone number is 087 1313795 or by contacting any member of the Council.

Wishing you all an enjoyable and successful 2010.

Laura Mullaney

IIRRT President
